“When do you think the rivers will become fishable?”.

That’s a question I’ve been getting daily. Looking into the long term forecast there’s rain daily for the next 10 days. It looks like it’s slowly starting to taper but lots of over one inch days in that forecast. This will keep the river up and once it does start to drop, I’d imagine it will stay up with big flows for some time even with fishable viz. That being said one of two things will happen. We will either have a great February and March. Or we will not have much of a February and will have March. Last year I stopped fishing at the end of February due to lack of rain which is my favorite time to fish. So at this point it’s hard to tell. The last few years the Russian had a lot of fishable days due to lack of good winters. Well, we have a wet winter and just as I remember growing up we have a big brown river which was the case for many years during normal winters. So if you’re new to this whole Steelhead thing on the Russian, this is more of a normal river for this time of year. But there’s good news, when the river does drop into shape there should be a healthy amount of fish in the system. I would much rather us get these really big storms now then next month during the peak of the season. I will say as much as this rain affects the fisherman keeping us from fishing, it’s for the greater good for our community and fish. If this does continue into next month I will be looking into other options and will be letting you all know what that is when the time comes. Looking forward to greener water in the near future.
